Analysis of social networking systems is increasingly becoming a real hot topic - there is a huge amount of information in a corporate social software solution such as Lotus Connections and advanced techniques are required to extract and interrogate the data.

IBM has released a new ISSL ExpertBriefing podcast covering this area:

Being able to quickly find the right people within an organization who can provide the information and expertise needed to address business challenges can give a company a significant competitive edge. With the help of social software and social networking analysis technology, individuals now have the tools to more quickly provide and find information as well as build and leverage important social networks across an organization.

In this podcast, Bill Kilduff, Chris Desforges, and Scot Bentley from IBM Software Services for Lotus discuss the latest trends in social software and uses for social networking analysis technology. They also provide an overview of Atlas for Lotus Connections, an IBM solution that helps users analyze their social networks, identify experts, and better leverage their relationships to those experts.
Get the podcast and transcript here.

Now this is a really tricky area, configuring SSO in Lotus Connections - in my experience, getting Connections and Quickr/Domino in SSO harmony is a particular area of pain. Here's a cracking little developerWorks whitepaper detailing how it should be done in a standalone Connections environment:
This article explains how to configure single sign-on (SSO) with Lightweight Third-Party Authentication (LTPA) for IBM Lotus Connections 2.0. Learn the basics of SSO and LTPA and the detailed steps for configuring SSO in a stand-alone environment.

Single sign-on (SSO) can be complex to configure, but it is beneficial to users who otherwise become annoyed when repeatedly queried for login information. Using the new home page feature in Lotus Connections 2.0, you can easily switch between different features, but you must enable SSO to connect to them seamlessly.
Of particular importance is getting the domain name right - you must add the leading dot, else behaviour can be very variable, especially in Communities Forums:

Well recommended.

IBM had seemed to be hiding its light under a bushel when it comes revealing details of what is new in Lotus Connections 2.0.1. There was preciously little information on the Connections product pages or in the Infocenter.

Thankfully, Luis Benitez brings us his own description:
One question that I'm continuously asked is: "what's new in Lotus Connections v2.0.1?". Well, here's a list of what I've gathered:

   * Quickr integration with Activities - Push-button publication from an Activity into one of your Quickr Places for permanent document storage
   * Quickr integration with Communities - Allows communities to use Quickr as their content repository and document collaboration platform.
   * Enhanced person card
   * E-mail is no longer a required attribute (great for external implementations)
   * New feeds inside of Communities
   * New feeds for forums
   * New APIs for Activities, Blogs, Communities, Homepage (federated search), Profiles
   * Hidden support for STLinks (more about this tomorrow)
   * User Interface and Usability enhancements, for example:
         o Can now save members as part of an activity template
         o Drag-n-drop activities entries
         o Uploading images to a blog is now easier
         o Improvements in the Activities widget
         o Easier way to work with multiple bookmarks
   * A couple of bug fixes
Excellent, Luis!

After reading this, I went to check out the out the Infocenter again, and voila! We now have some much better documentation:
What's new in administering?
Lotus Connections:

   * Preventing e-mail addresses from being displayed
   * Removing the data associated with a person or group
   * Changing the language used for notifications

Activities feature:

   * Integrating Activities with IBM Lotus Quickr

Blogs feature:

   * Synchronizing user data

Communities feature:

   * Changing Communities configuration settings
   * Removing unwanted or inappropriate content
   * Filtering active content
   * Configuring the size of the community description
   * Configuring display settings
   * Managing members and member IDs
   * Administering managed applications
   * Changing configuration settings for managed applications
   * Using the Lotus Quickr Delayed Synchronizer
   * Viewing and collecting Communities metrics
   * Retrieving and listing community data
   * Filtering community lists
   * Managing the forum scheduler

Dogear feature:

   * Synchronizing user data for Dogear

Home page feature:

   * Synchronizing member IDs between the Home page and LDAP databases

Profiles feature:

   * Updating the LDAP
   * Synchronizing LDAP changes with Profiles
   * Synchronizing the Profiles database with LDAP
   * Updating Profiles when changing LDAP directory
   * Determining the notification language for Profiles
   * Populating Profiles with photos
   * Uploading pronunciation files
   * Profiles attributes
   * Enabling custom extension attributes
   * Specifying a custom extension attribute label
   * Adding third-party links via the XML configuration file
   * Adding third-party links using JavaScript

What's new in extending?

   * Lotus Connections Connector for Lotus Quickr
Much much better!
First of a few posts on the latest release of Lotus Connections, 2.0.1, which has shipped today.

The media is starting to become available on Partnerworld and on Passport Advantage.

Here are the images:

So new versions of the installer for AIX, Linux and AIX, plus a new Pilot release for Windows. Given that the eAssembly is not yet listed, I am guessing that the upload is not yet complete. I will update this post as the day goes on.

*UPDATE*

It looks as though the four images shown above are the only new ones for Connections 2.0.1 so far (at 14:00 BST / 10:00 EST). However, the "Download Connections 2.0.1" page lists a number of new images including new Quick Start Guides, Database Wizards and License Agreements. Hopefully these will be uploaded soon.

Sorry for the quiet around here (oops thats blogging rule #57 broken again), but life has been very very busy with multiple Lotus Connections rollouts on the go at customer sites spread widely around the country - meaning lots of late nights and lots of travel.

However, that has given the opportunity to once again get down and dirty with the nitty gritty of Connections implementations, whether it is creating new assemblylines in TDI, developing new Connections themes in CSS, learning more about the demands of clustering WAS, or getting more exposure to various RDBMS products (Oracle, SQL and DB2) than I'd ever plannned to! The posts in the Connections Forum and PMRs raised on IBM Support will vouch for the fact that these last few weeks haven't always been easy, but great progress has been made and the results have shown what a powerful and flexible solution Lotus Connections is.

I have a whole series of tips that need to go up on this blog and I'll try to get them up ASAP over the coming couple of weeks.

The first relates to a very common scenario when installing and testing new Connections deployments - various features reporting that a users uid or mail are null. This happens particularly in the Homepage and Profiles features, but I've also seen it in Dogear and Communities too - a specific example might be when sending a colleague invite to another user. A quick check in the DB Employee table will show that all the relevant fields are populated for all the users, so the error message is a little vague or even misleading in some cases.

So what causes the issue? Check that the user does not have multiple sessions open with the Connections/WAS environment - either connected as different users or as an authenticated user and anonymous. A quick test would be to completely close the browser session, clear cache and log back in. In my particular scenario, I was logged in to Connections as my own user in one Firefox tab and logged into the WebSphere ISC console as wasadmin in another. Closing and restarting the browser sorted this out. A lesson learnt therefore, to use a combination of browsers when configuring/testing - say FF for Connections and Safari for the ISC work.

Hope this helps you at some stage. A huge shout to the 'Connections collective' that have helped at various stages in the last few weeks - Luis, Handly, Jon, Mac and others - it's awesome that we can support each other in this way.

As Lotus Connections emerged in the field, I worked on many of the key projects for ISSL, providing architecture and implementation guidance to customers, business partners and colleagues. Last year, I transitioned to the Lotus Greenhouse team as their Technical Team Lead and helped bring in many of the Lotus technologies that are hosted there today. This week, I am excited to get started with the Lotus Connections product team and will be joining Suzanne and Baan as a Product Manager.

Lotus Connections, has taken off in the Enterprise 2.0 space and I am sure it will only continue to rise. Thomond to you and I, is a leading thinker and practioner in the area of Innovation and the ways organizations can harness the opportunities it presents. He operates from a team based at Imperial College, London and has been heavily involved in helping a number of organizations to begin their journey to understand the opportunities that occur from disruptions in their markets and how they be turned to their advantage. The plan is that he will lead part of the session and engage the audience in some of the participation that we have planned to liven up the last slot of the day.

This collaboration all stemmed from one of those interesting moments that happens every now and then when you are
(a) lucky enough to have an opportunity
(b) daft enough to take it

Earlier this year I made the journey from the depths of the Wiltshire/Gloucestershire border country to the Big Smoke to attend one of David Gurteen's excellent Knowledge Cafes. I arrived later than intended to find the session had already begun so I settled down at one of the many large tables within a room containing the best part of 100 people, all listening attentively to David setting the scene. David then turned things over to the attendees for small group discussions at each table. Under his prompting we were periodically rotated around the room to mix up the audience and generate even more debate.

If you have never been along to one of these sessions then keep an eye on David's website and I would thoroughly recommend attending because you meet all sorts of interesting people, such as Peter. We got chatting and discovered we had a number of mutual interests and established contact which has recently sparked back into life through Kate Morrison, another mutual connection.

So expect some swirling whiteboards and a flurry of challenging thoughts to round off what we hope will be a very informative and interesting session.

See the UK LUG website at http://www.uklug.info for more info.

Following on from my post about the new Widgets technotes, Luis Benitez has added some more context:
The landing page of Lotus Connections can be easily extended by IT. An administrator has total control of which widgets can be deployed to the page. An end-user has total control of which widgets they want to see and the layout of these widgets.

In the meantime, you should know that one of the easiest ways to get started with widgets, is by using existing ones. I recently worked with a customer where we added Google Gadgets to the Lotus Connections Home Page. And we did this in a matter of minutes!!! Thinks about this for a second... and envision the vast variety of Google Gadgets out there. How cool is it that you can get one of these loaded into Lotus Connections in a matter of minutes??? Awesome, huh??!!

Adding Google Gadgets to the Lotus Connections Home page

Today, we finally have the step-by-step procedure on how to do this! The article also explains, at a high-level, how to create your own iWidget (if you weren't using the Lotus Widget Factory). Here's a sample of how the Google Date and Time Gadget looks, as a widget, in the Lotus Connections Home page:

What does this mean? You now have free out-of-the box integration with:

   * Facebook (for those of you who weren't too happy with my first approach)
   * RSS readers
   * MySpace
   * LinkedIn
   * Skype
   * Google Docs
   * or with whatever any of the 45,000+ Google Gadgets provide!

Additionally, remember that the Profiles page is also made up of widgets. Therefore, you could also deploy the Google Gadgets to the Profiles page. Neat, eh? Ready to get started? You'll find the article and the sample widget here. Enjoy!
I know from previous discussions with Luis that he is really excited to get this content out there, so please do take a look and give some thought as to how you could enhance your Connections 2.0 installation with the many Google Gadgets out there, or else develop your own to interface with existing applications in your environment...
